Candles for beginners

How to make candles

Candle Making is fun and makes a great gift.

Decide what kind of wax you want to use to make your candle. There are several different kinds of wax to choose from. One pound of paraffin wax by weight will equal approximately 20 oz of liquid melted wax. One pound of soy wax will equal approximately 18 oz of liquid when melted. One pound of beeswax by weight will equal approximately 16 oz of liquid when melted.

Put together a double boiler similar to one you might use while cooking food. You cannot put candle wax directly on heat. It must be melted slowly or it may catch fire or evaporate. Fill a large pot or pan halfway with water. Place a smaller pot or pan in the larger one. This smaller pot is the one you will melt the wax in. Keep in mind that wax can be difficult to clean–you may want to purchase a cheap, heat-safe pot that you designate specifically for making candles.

Cut or shred you wax into chunks or shavings. Smaller chunks of wax melt better than larger chunks. By using smaller pieces, you will also ensure that the wax melts at an even rate.

Place the wax chunks or shavings in the smaller pot or pan. Turn the heat to high so that the water boils. The boiling water will slowly melt the wax.

Use a thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature of the wax. You can purchase candy or candle thermometers at a cooking or craft store. If you do not have a candy thermometer, you can also use a meat thermometer. Just remember that wax can be hard to remove.

  • Paraffin wax should be melted until it reaches between 122 and 140°F (50 and 60°C).
  • Soy wax should be melted until it reaches between 170 and 180 degrees (76.6 and 82.2°C).
  • Beeswax should be melted until it reaches roughly 145 degrees (62.7°C). You can go a little bit higher but try not to exceed 175 degrees (79.4°C).
  • Old candles should be melted at around 185 degrees (85°C). Remove the old wicks with tongs.

Add scent to your melted wax. The scent you choose is up to you. Scents such as essential oils can be purchased at your local craft store. It is best to read the bottle’s directions rather than base the amount you put in on how strongly it smells after the scent has already been added. Stir well.

Place a wick in the center of the candle mold. The wick should be in the center of the candle mold with about two inches sticking out of the candle. You can adhere the wick to the bottom of your tin using double-stick adhesive. To keep the wick in place, loop the end that will be out of the wax around the center of a pen or pencil. Rest the pen across the top of the mold you will be pouring your wax into. Make sure the wick hangs down straight into the center of the mold.

  • You can also use a long clip if you have one. Clip the wick so that it is in the center of the mold. The clip has to be large enough to rest across the entire mold.
  1. Prepare your molds. You can use tins, mason jars, old teacups, really any sort of container that you know can withstand heat. Metal tins are generally the safest way to go but as long as you know your container can stand up to heat, you can really use whatever you like. Place them on a flat surface in your protected workspace (such as on a cookie sheet or a cutting board.)
  2. 2

Pour the melted wax into the mold. Pour slowly so that it does not spill over. Make sure not to knock the wick out of the mold accidentally. You are the judge of how full you want your molds to be. Beeswax will shrink a little once it has cooled so keep that in mind when pouring it into your molds.

  3. 3

Cool the wax. It is best to cool them for a full 24 hours if possible. The longer you let them cool, the better they will be.

Holistic Body Therapy; Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Hawaiian Lomi-Lomi Massage, Swedish Massage, Shiatsu, Thai Massage, Tantric Healing Massage, Pelvic-Heart Integration, Lymphatic Drainage Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Sacred Spot Massage and Yoni Healing, Kahuna, Emotional and Physical Release Massage, Spiritual Hot Rock Massage, Journey Therapy, Aspects of Counselling, Yoga Stretches, Breath work, Toning (with sounds), Chin Nei Tsang Massage (Abdominal massage), Karasi Nei Tsang (genital therapeutic massage)

His scope and level of training is truly admirable, but it is his dedication, patience and the deep level of understanding that Mal has that truly makes him and his work special.  Mal has spent years researching female sexual dysfunction and has a deep understanding of female ejaculation. His work has gained him international acclaim and he has treated thousands of women from across the globe.

When speaking about Tantric Journey he says, “it may challenge everything you ever believed in both culturally and religiously in the modern Western life”.  It is certainly a therapy unlike any other that is available in the UK at the moment it combines the ancient science of Tantra with deep breathing, sound therapy, body movement and talking therapy.

This treatment gives the client ultimate control of the pace and focus of the healing.  Tantric Journey teaches the body and mind to self-heal, self-develop and to master the skills of achieving a full body, extended Multi Orgasmic Response (MORE), instead of a localised genital release, putting the woman in charge of her own sexuality.

The deep bodywork that Mal carries out in a Tantric Journey healing session will help to dissolve negative thoughts, feelings, issues and blocks and will create sufficient energies that will spread throughout your body to heal every cell.

Marquees to suit any occasion and season

September is usually the last busy marquee for sale month of the season. If you’re still very busy through October and the Christmas market then you is doing very well. There is a change to the way people use marquees during the winter though:

  • Often customers are after gaining a room from the house for a party rather than hosting the whole function outside.
  • Obviously you need to provide plenty of marquee heating
  • Butt the marquee hard up against the house or use a walkway with sides
  • Allow more time to put the marquee up. It could be cold, wet and/or windy and the daylight hours are shorter
  • Allow more maintenance time between jobs, marquees need cleaning and drying unless they’re going straight back out
  • It’s tempting to raise the hire charge of the marquee due to the greater running costs but unfortunately the opposite is usually true, because winter is drastically quieter than summer for parties you often have to offer discounts or incentives to be competitive and get the work.
  • Buy some good waterproofs. We’re quite fortunate in that once the marquee is up we’re generally working in the dry doing all of the interior work but if you’re having to do that in wet clothes life is not fun. Get the marquee up quickly, get all the kit inside then it becomes a normal day whatever the weather outside (assuming you’ve got good quality marquees of course!)
  • We recommend testing any gutter before you leave site anyway but especially do so during the winter
  • If snow is forecast leave heating on very low to prevent it building up on the roof. UK marquees are not designed for snow loading.
  • edit: As the excellent County Marquees pointed out after posting wooden floors are a very popular option during the winter. Not only do they give a good surface but you are raising the height of the floor – a popular (but expensive) solution on soft ground prone to water logging or hard surfaces where water can come back under the sides.      A 6x10m DIY Marquee Two marquees set up as a beer hall (full) A lined DIY Marquee ready for the party

In the main erecting winter marquees is a far more relaxed business than summer ones, the company is generally not as busy so you can take your time to get it right and ensure you’ve tried absolutely everything on the nearest sandwich shops menu.

Escape the hectic city life

We decided to escape to the countryside for the mid-term break, away from our busy lives in the city, away from the rush and pressure of life. We loaded up the bikes and the kids packed their favourite toys and off we headed. We weren’t sure where we were going to end up all we knew is that we needed a homely place that served meals, safe, comfortable and affordable.

We also didn’t want to have to travel too far from home so we headed for Sussex. As we were winding through the country lanes we decided to look on the internet for places to stay and came acrossan amazing bed and breakfast Dunsfold. It looked like the perfect place to stay so we called up and the hosts had a room available which we booked.

It was fantastic; we had the most amazing break, beautiful walks and cycle tracks at Bed and Breakfast West Sussex. The food was scrumptious and we have decided that this will definitely be our new secret getaway.
